Reviewer: Brian Robins Abridged version : "Pride of place is given to three groups of songs, five of them by perhaps the finest 17th-century Spanish songwriter, Juan Hidalgo (1614-85), All are in the familiar but infinitely variable coplas (verses) and estribillio (refrain) form, with a song from Sebastián Durón's zarzuela Salir el amor del mundo (1696) even managing to introduce a stretch of Italian recitative, testimony to the frequently overlooked outside influences on 17th-century Spanish music. This song, "Sosieguen descansen", opens with a meltingly lovely estrebillo; to my mind it's one of the best things on the disc. But all the songs, mostly concerned with not-too-serious philosophizing on the vicissitudes of love, are delightful, and Figueras shows that even in 1976 she had developed the rare ability to express words in a way that goes directly to the heart of the matter, touching or teasing her listener as the case may be. Otherwise there's some vintage Savall in a group of pieces by Martín y Coll, and a further instrumental interlude in the shape of two harpsicord pieces by Cabanilles." |
