Fitch Abridged version : Peter Phillips is surely right to describe Gombert as the Flemish Renaissance master who least deserves the epithet "minor". Tradition has it that his cycle of eight Magnificats — of which this recording presents the first four — was simultaneously an act of propitiation (following a spell in the galleys for sexual misconduct) addressed to Charles V, and Gombert's swan-song. In any event it presents his art in an admirably compact and concise manner. Even in those sections scored for four voices or fewer, Gombert's contrapuntal dexterity is marvellous. His power to absorb the listener, too, is all the more remarkable since he usually eschews most means of varying the texture (such as chordal writing and antiphonal effects). Most impressive of the four settings here is the cumulative architecture of the third, in which a voice is added with each succeeding verse, from three to eight. The Tallis Scholars' accustomed clarity of detail is here employed to great effect as the texture grows gradually denser. (Four voices are the norm in the other Magnificats, the top lines often taken by the ensemble's countertenors.) In keeping with the single prevailing mensuration, tempos are stable and broadly the same throughout. The one exception I could detect, a perceptibly slower "Esurientes" (the hungry' in the third setting), rather halts the flow of the music and seems an unnecessary concession to the aesthetics of word-painting.
