Plus qu'une oeuvre de circonstance, en l'occurrence composée pour Philippe V, Los Elementos, sur un texte anonyme daté de 1704-1705, propose une conception particulière du théâtre musical: plasticité des voix, affection parodique pour le travestissement (héritage du théâtre de Lope de Vega) et trait personnel, choix d'un plateau vocal presque exclusivement féminin. On ne sait quel caractère précis célébrer en particulier dans l'approche fine et nuancée du chef Lopez Banzo: il éclaire l'extraordinaire variété rythmique, les chromatismes osés aux pointe denses du texte. Sa lecture naturelle de l'hispanité baroque, picturale et sensuelle, trouve ici une remarquable intensité. L'articulation, le sens de la tension progressive - élément premier du théâtre musical-, un évident plaisir dans la restitution foisonnante de la texture orchestrale, indiquent une lecture absolument convaincante. A un travail ciselé opéré sur couleurs et accents de l'orchestre, les chanteurs apportent des résonances poétiques à chacune des allégories vocales. Marta Almajano incarne El Ayre/La Aurora avec une grâce dramatique, sensible et expressive qui inspire l'un de ses rôles les plus captivants. Magie, parodie, plasticité fulgurante des voix et des instruments, instrumentarium foisonnant, dévoilent l'invention spécifique du théâtre espagnol baroque, au début du XVIIIè siècle."
Reviewer: Marguerite Haladjian Original text "At the heart of a truly difficult political period, such as the passage from the Hapsburgs to the Bourbons, the theatrical works of the Spaniard Antonio de Literes (1673-1747) shed a particular light on Italian opera. This is more than a commissioned work, even if Los Elementos, based on an anonymous work from 1704-1705, was composed for Philip V, for it suggests a personalized vision of musical theatre. The malleability of voice, a paradoxical affection for travesty inherited from the theatre of Lope de Vega, along with a personal characteristic and choice of singers that is nearly exclusively feminine. It is difficult to say exactly which precise characteristic is most celebrated in López-Banzo's delicate and nuanced approach. He illuminates the extraordinary rhythmic variety, the tonic alterations of metric, the daring colorations in the text's densest places. His approach to Hispanic Baroque, pictorial and sensual, is remarkably strong here. The articulation and sense of progressive tension (a fundamental element of musical theatre) is clearly a pleasure to be heard in the lavish restoration of the orchestral texture. All of this leads to an absolutely convincing result. In a work polished with orchestral colorings and accents, the singers highlight the poetic echoes of each of the vocal allegories. Marta Almajano embodies El Ayre/La Aurora with a sensitive and expressive theatrical grace in one of her most captivating roles. Magic, parody, a blazing elasticity of voices and instruments and lavish orchestration unveil the specific invention of the Spanish baroque theatre at the beginning of the 18th century."

Reviewer: Tess Knighton Abridged version : "Literes proves himself to be a composer of imagination and secure technique; possibly in a future interpretation a greater sense of the whole might be achieved as there is a slight start-stop feel to Eduardo Lopez Banzo’s pacing, although the choice of tempos is on the whole convincing. The playing is fine (the continuo occasionally over-exuberant), and the overall sound is very good. I would strongly recommend this CD to anyone with an interest in baroque music (and not just Spanish music) for the quality of the work and the contribution this recording makes to a richer and fuller picture of the musical past."
