F. Weber The disc title, Lettera amorosa, refers to the opening selection in this mixed collection of secular vocal works. Two other familiar pieces are the Lamento d’Arianna (the longest work on the program) and the Lamento della Ninfa. These are solos given to Mariana Flores, while Ohimé, dov’è il mio ben adds a second soprano. The only contrasting performance is Perchè se m’odiavi for two tenors and bass. The concluding piece, Voglio di vita uscir, which survives only in a Naples manuscript, was first recorded by Carole Bogard on Cambridge and then by Emma Kirkby on Hyperion (reissued on Nonesuch). The two opera excerpts are Ottavia’s aria from the first act of Poppea and La Musica’s Prologue to L’Orfeo.
As a showcase for Mariana Flores, her lovely voice and her grasp of the Monteverdi idiom are demonstrated effectively. I could compare each piece to earlier recordings, but the result would simply rank Flores with the best of them. García Alarcón, directing from the keyboards, makes an important contribution to her success. The notes on the music (in three languages) are good, but offer not a word on any of the performers, just two sentences oddly added on the back cover referencing their Cavalli set. Very fine. | |
