Reviewer: J.
F. Weber This valuable compilation offers seven of Thomas Tallis’s votive antiphons previously issued in five of the seven discs available so far in Andrew Carwood’s Tallis collection. Three discs were reviewed in Fanfare 29:3, 37:4, and 39:3; the other two, CDA 68076 and CDA 68121, were not submitted for review but are in my collection. Like Carwood’s even more extensive collection of William Byrd’s sacred works, all of these were recorded in the Fitzalan chapel of Arundel castle, the seat of the dukes of Norfolk, the highest ranking recusant peers in England. His vocal ensemble has a thoroughly sympathetic approach to Byrd’s Tudor-era partner.
Some collectors may not specialize in the Tudor period enough to spring for the entire set, but nevertheless realize the splendid nature of the votive antiphons that were composed during the reign of Henry VIII. This compilation is exactly what they are looking for. In addition to the little O nata lux (two minutes long), there are six strikingly impressive works here, including the three longest, Gaude gloriosa for six voices, and Salve intemerata virgo and Ave, Dei patris filia for five voices. Sung at the end of the day after Compline, these anthems marked the high point of Tudor polyphony. There are many lovers of Renaissance music who will appreciate the chance to have this collection. | |
