Christmas in Naples
might appear to be
somewhat similar to various other issues discussed earlier, but a new CD of
that title from Pan Classics is an enthralling programme of music
essentially founded upon three Notturni and a Pastorale by Gaetano
Veneziano (1656‑1718) sequenced with two Sinfonias and a Sonata by
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660‑1725, Domenico's father) in a programme of more
than usual interest. The performers are soprano Jenny Högström, countertenor
Filippo Mineccia, tenor Kevin Skelton and bass Marc Pantus, with the
Ensemble Odysse directedby Andrea Friggl (who also plays the harpsichord).
The result is a virtually flawless record of what will be unfamiliar music
for many listeners, performed with such commitment and artistry that one is
compelled to listen. The third (Allegro) movement of Alessandro
Scarlatti's First Sinfonia is quite wonderfully played, though I felt the
acoustic at the conclusion of Veneziano's Second Notturno – the 'Tu
autem Domine' movement ‑ was cut off just a shade too Soon. But this remains
a really enticing disc, proving that 'authenticity' in performance need not
mean a reduction in musical enjoyment and enlightenment. |
