W. Barker The second of these Dauce releases takes us into Charpentier’s sacred writing. The main item here is, of course, the Pastorale on the Birth of our Savior Jesus Christ (H.483). This is a Christmas work in two parts. In the first, the heavenly forces celebrate the birth of Jesus as the salvation of humankind. In the Second the shepherds and rural folk try to figure out what is going on, discover the Virgin and Child, and rejoice in realizing what this Nativity means. Christie was ahead of the game on this piece (HM 1901083; not reviewed). As a replacement for that, Dauce’s recording is enchanting. Moreover, he is the first to deal with the fact that Charpentier made revisions of the work’s Part 2 for later performances. The first revision presents a picture of the shepherds at the manger. The second revision is an extension of saluting the coming of salvation. In between the original version of the Pastorale and the revisions, this remarkably rich release offers a pre-Christmas bonus in the form of Charpentier’s short settings of the eight antiphons for Advent, each beginning with the exclamation “O” (H.36-43). (That set was recorded by Christie for Harmonia Mundi, 905130; not reviewed.) And, not only that; we are treated to two interpolations in those: an instrumental setting of a French carol and a texted treatment for voices of the same melody. The performances here are simply delicious. | |
