Purcell was especially proud
of his 1683 set of sonatas, as well he might: endlessly inventive, fusing
different European styles yet retaining his distinctive voice, these works
have been lucky on record. The present version is steelier than the
Retrospect Trio’s warmer approach (Linn), while at the same time being more
flexible in terms of tempi and continuo. With generous playing times and
excellent sound apiece, be sure you own one or the other.
