Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762) was one of the leading Italian violinists of his day and one of the great Arcangelo Corelli’s most brilliant pupils. He was a peripatetic artist, and his career took him from Italy to England, Ireland, Scotland, France, and th eNetherlands. He was also one of the first violinists to publish a violin method. The Art of the Violin came out in London in 1751. It contains detailed instructions for violin playing and has 12 compositions for violin with figured bass for cello and harpsichord. These 12 compositions are performed here by the assigned instruments plus a theorbo, which makes the sound richer and more varied. Gottfried von der Goltz and his colleagues play with an authentically light touch and are very imaginative in filling in the figured bass. Two sonatas from the Op. 4 collection are included. This is an enjoyable way to spend the better part of an hour if you fancy late Italian baroque violin. Very good sound.
