Reviewer: Catherine
Moore This is a good introduction to several types of instrumental and vocal music from 17th-Century Italy with an emphasis on dance forms and sonatas. Most of the pieces were composed by Claudio Monteverdi or Salomone Rossi, and the selections are well sequenced and performed. The Clematis ensemble uses a colourful range of instruments for the basso continuo— including lirone, organ, guitar, theorbo, and harpsichord—to fine effect. Tenor Zachary Wilder animates the music well, effectively capturing the dance themes and style. Notes, texts, translations. | |
