Something about Cornelius Becker’s verse translation of Psalms inspired Schütz to lay aside his grand schematics in favor of simple melody-driven textures that draw attention to the textual aesthetics. Following the strophic construction of Becker’s texts, setting melodies with simple triadic chords, shows Schütz’s

austere side, far from the grand  scale and expression in his polychoral vocal concertos. But these settings are not entirely lacking in feeling. While ‘Wie Sehr Lieblich Und Schöne’ may be texturally restrained, it has an unusual chromatic melody, which leads to some exotic voice-leading. ‘Danket Dem Herren, Gebt Ihm Her’, by far the longest hymn on the program, evokes a dance-like spirit through its “Halleluia” refrain, frequent syncopations, and dotted rhythms. Rademann performs it here in alternatim fashion. Assigning various soloists and

chorus to alternating stanzas, he shows how inventive a simple hymn can sound.
