F. Weber Hirundo Maris is a duo made up of the soprano Arianna Savall and Petter Udland Johansen, who sing, play, and composed the meditations that are inserted among the vocal works here. Previously they recorded Chants du Sud et du Nord on ECM New Series, dedicated to Savall’s mother, Montserrat Figueras, as well as several other CDs. She had previously sung with her parents’ ensemble on Alia Vox, but formed the present duo in 2008. This background is necessary to explain the ensemble’s name “Hirundo maris,” or sea swallow, a bird that migrates from Catalonia to Norway, south to north, linking the homelands of the two members. Savall sings the Hildegard selections with occasional participation by several assisting colleagues, while Johansen sings David’s lament for Jonathan with Savall accompanying on the Medieval harp. Or so it seems, since the assignment of performers on each selection is not specified. Abelard’s lament, the only one of six that has been written down in staff notation, has been recorded by Thomas Binkley on a Reflexe LP, Paul Hillier (8:4, LP only), two members of the Augsburg ensemble (14:1 and 33:6), Philip Cave of the Oxford Camerata, Juliette Hughes of the Viriditas ensemble, William Lee of the Schola Gregoriana, the men of Sequentia ensemble (20:2), and Paul Elliott of the Pro Arte Singers (22:1). Not all are solos as this is, but all are creditable interpretations of a Medieval lament, and Johansen ranks with the best. The meditations serve to give breathing space between groups of vocal works. I prefer Hildegard unaccompanied, either solo or choral, but this is one of the better discs of its kind. | |
