Pfeil Baroque composer Marin Marais is probably best known for his work for viols, but he suggested that his music could be performed on other instruments, too. In fact, in the preface to one book of gamba pieces, he suggests that the music could be performed on flute, recorder, organ, and even oboe. Christopher Palameta has arranged six gamba suites for oboe and continuo. The material works so well on the oboe that the listener might not guess that these were transcriptions at all. Palameta captures the elegant finesse of the French Baroque style, emphasizing the unique character of each dance movement.
His clear,
singing tone is sensitively accompanied by the continuo group of gamba,
theorbo, and harpsichord. This program is thoroughly enjoyable. I hope that
recordings like this will bring greater attention to Marais’s music. | |
