Simeone A set of secular cantatas by Bach is as fascinating as it is rewarding. Geschwinde, ihr wirbelden Winde, BWV201 (subtitled the 'Contest between Phoebus and Pan'), and Zerreisset, zersprenget, zertrümmert die Gruft, BWV205 ‑ written as a 'Dramma per musica' for the birthday of a professor at Leipzig University ‑ both hint at the kind of music Bach might have written had he ever çornposed an opera. Lasst uns sorgen, lasst uns wachen, BWV213 ‑ subtitled 'Hercules at the Crossroads' ‑ is likely to intrigue anyone familiar with the Christmas Oratorio. Bach harvested the music from this cantata extensively: music from it appears in Parts 1‑3 of the Christmas Oratorio (including 'Bereite dich, Zion'), as well as providing most of the musical source material for Part 4. The immensely persuasive performances here are given by the RIAS Kammerchor and Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, directed by René Jacobs. Fermer la fenêtre/Close window |
