On Palm Sunday 1786 C.P.E. Bach conducted a charity
concert in Hamburg in aid of an association of pro bono doctors. The first
half presented works by his father, J. S. Bach, and by Handel. This CD
recreates the second half of the programme, which was of his own works: a
Magnificat, a motet on the text ‘Heilig ist Gott’, and a Symphony in D
major. The energetic and committed performances of the Akademie für Alte
Musik Berlin and the RIAS Kammerchor under Hans-Christoph Rademann make this
music a joy to listen to. Particularly notable are tenor Lothar Odinius’
rendition of the ‘Quia Fecit’, with its Handelian melismas, and the
controlled choral dynanics in the : ‘Heilig’. This would make an excellent
introduction to C. P. E. Bach’s work.
