The Little Organ Book was a product of Bach's years in Weimar (1708–17). His original scheme was to write 164 chorale settings, covering the entire Lutheran church year, but only 46 were completed. They are an extraordinary testament to his genius in bringing his endless creative imagination to chorale melodies. Albert Schweitzer described it as "the dictionary of Bach's musical language", referring to the pedagogical nature of the collection, one of its purposes being to serve as a "textbook" on how to treat chorale melodies. Farr delivers clean, clear, business–like performances that are unfussy and free of quirks. He plays on the large 3–manual, 47–stop, 1730 Tobias Heinrich Gottfried Trost organ in the Stadtkirche in Waltershausen, Germany. Bach admired Trost's organs and, as it is found in Thuringia, it is highly probable that he knew and played this instrument. The recorded sound is clear and resonant. Notes on the music and organ with photos and specification.
