This new recording includes a
broad selection of 17th Century French airs de cour by Antoine
Boesset, Etienne Moulinié, Pierre Guedron, and a single air by François de
Chancy. Many of these airs, though published in collected volumes by the
individual composers, were originally from the court ballets produced in the
reign of Louis XIII. Interludes are supplied by court dances from this same
period (and two arrangements of harpsichord pieces by Jacques Champion de
Chambonnieres and Louis Couperin), though performed by a much smaller
instrumental group than participated in the original productions (see, for
example, the recording by Jordi Savall of similar orchestral repertoire,
Mar/Apr 2003: 212). Daucé has arranged the nine singers of Ensemble Correspondances into a variety of groupings from a solo voice and continuo to the full five-part versions found in the contemporary publications. The interpretations are quite elegant and the singers add the elaborate yet tasteful ornamentations that were typical in this repertoire.
There are have been earlier releases of works by these composers (Boesset, M/A 2005; Guedron, J/A & S/O 1998; and Moulinié, M/A 1997, N/D 1999, M/A 2001, J/A 2006), but this new release demonstrates the same sensitivity and creativity found on two releases by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants (S/O 2016: 226 & M/J 2019: 179). The extensive booklet essay and complete texts and translations add value to this recording. | |
