W. Moore This is an unusual collection of works by someone not usually considered a composer for gamba; some of the pieces are transcriptions made by Aziz. That includes a Sonata, B 372, originally for violin and continuo, and a Prelude, B 437 and Suite, B 448, originally for keyboard. The program begins with Sonata in G minor, B 364b for violin, but Handel rewrote the opening an octave lower in the alto clef and added the remark "per la viola da gamba". There is also a Kessel Sonata 5 in D, possibly by JJ Kress; a Sonata in C attributed to Handel, and a Suite 4 for harpsichord solo, B 429, and a Prelude from Sainte-Colombe's Suite in E minor for solo gamba. Aziz and Yamamoto play with sensitivity and warmth. Aziz uses a little vibrato, but the style suits this music well. Repeats are taken but there's nothing boring about it. The recorded sound is fine, and the length of the program is also a plus. | |
