Loewen The sheer demand for Vivaldi’s music gave us hundreds of concertos, placing nearly every conceivable instrument in the solo spot. There are more than 250 concertos for violin, but also 40 for bassoon, and others for oboe, trumpets, mandolin, and so on. This program includes a small sample of them. The program opens, appropriately, with an overture—the Sinfonia to Vivaldi’s threeact opera Ottone in Villa. There follow seven concertos: for violin in C minor (R 761); for bassoon in D minor (R 481); for two oboes in C (R 534); for violin in E (R 271); for lute in D (R 93); for four violins in B-flat (R 553); and for two oboes and two violins in D (R 564a). Each is
brilliant under the direction of Elisa Citterio. | |
