The arrangements are of
harpsichord concertos. They work well, except much of the passage-work
sounds more like Vivaldi thanBach and becomes exhausting after a
while.Gardiner leads a tight and enthusiastic partnership with Debretzeni.
Sometimes the orchestra dwarfs her, but I prefer that to a tepid
accompaniment. The usual annoyances of period performances surface in her
playing: a pressed and thin sound, coordination slip-ups, and misplaced
accents. As far as period recordings go, it is competitive. But I just
listened to a Szeryng recording of Bach
…, and in
comparison this is hardly worth a detour. | |
