Moore Excellent in all ways, this second solo album by countertenor Jakub Jozef Orlinski has the same forces as the first. Il Pomo D’Oro, under the direction of Maxim Emelyanychev, is first rate; and researcher Yannis François once again has unearthed unknown pieces to bring to a modern audience. He also is credited as the editor of several of the performing editions. 8 of the 18 pieces are identified as world premieres.
This time the theme is the
male lover in Baroque opera and the title means “Faces of Love”. Torn by
Love’s emotions, ranging from hatred, reason, duty, pain, and vengeance
(sometimes all in the same piece, as in Conti’s ‘Odio, Vendetta, Amore’ from
Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena), our hero must be fearless in expression
and dramatic in delivery. Well known arias by Cavalli (from La Calisto) and
Handel (Agrippina, Orlando, and other operas) are included; and Yannis
François notes that in this program “[we] surround Handel with the music of
composers he was inspired by or whom be inspired”. There’s a calmness in
Predieri’s ‘Finche Salvo e L’Amor Suo’ (from Scipione Il Giovane), and
happily languid phrasing expresses the determination and constancy of
Orpheus in Hasse’s ‘Sempre A Si Vaghi Rai’ (from Orfeo). I reviewed
Orlinski’s debut disc, called “Anima Sacra” (Erato 563374, M/A 2019: 215).
