To celebrate Telemann’s
enthusiasm for gardening, the Elephant House Quartet offers a program of
chamber music they’ve titled “Telemann’s Garden”. It consists of a Suite in
A minor (R 42:a3), Fantasias for Harpsichord (R 33:19) and Flute (R 40:2), a
Siciliana for Violin in B minor (R 40:22), the Paris Quartet No. 3 in G (R
43:G4), a Trio Sonata in A minor (R 42:a4), and the Recitativo & Arioso from
Sonata No. 9 in E minor from Essercizii Musici. As expected, the Fantasias
are the most densely wrought works, with challenging passage work for the
soloist. Without the benefit of continuo, Bolette Roed (recorder) and
Aureliusz Golinski do all of the heavy lifting, playing flashy phrases while
creating the illusion of an accompaniment. The Suite, Paris Quartet, and
Trio Sonata show Telemann’s genius for blending the serious with the naãve.
The gallant style of the fifth movement of the quartet, marked Moderé, is
the perfect foil for the layered passage work of previous movements. It is a
delightful program, expertly
performed. | |
