This Hercules Mass, honoring Rore’s patron Ercole II d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, was likely written not long after Rore went to Ferrara (1546). He stayed until Ercole’s death in 1559. The five Mass movements incorporate references to both Ercole II (famous as a city builder and peace maker) and his father Ercole I )famous as a conqueror), and are interleaved here with eight motets and the Pater Noster. Rore’s inventive text-setting offers the 10-voice male Weser-Renaissance ensemble plenty of opportunity to demonstrate a wide range of color and expressive gesture. By turns the singers are steadfastly faithful (in ‘Exaudiat Me Dominus’ as the anointed stand to call to the King), grippingly foreboding (in ‘Piange Quasi Virgo’ as sackcoth, ashes, and howling prevail), and prayerful clarity (in ‘Pater Noster’, where having no tenor parts opens up the texture). Uplifting floating figures characterize the “ascendit” section of the Credo, tempos are well chosen and well flexed, and the full ensemble blend is fluid and warm.

Musicology professor Katelijne Schiltz (University of Regensburg) ends her fine booklet essay with the hope that Rore’s music will become much better known because of the anniversary year in 2015. This recording was made that year but released in 2019. I recently reviewed an excellent recording of Rore’s madrigals performed by Blue Heron (Blue Heron 1009 [2CD], J/F 2020). Many recordings by this ensemble have been praised in ARG. Peter Loewen notes in his review of Schutz’s Sinfoniae Sacrae I (CPO 777929 J/F 2016) that “Weser-Renaissance Bremen is exemplary in every way as always”, and Charles Brewer liked their program of Christmas motets by Morales very much (CPO 777820, N/D 2014).
