Loewen Some favorite violin concertos by JS Bach—the G minor (S 1056r) and A minor (S 1041)—are joined with some others by Heinichen, Telemann, Graun, and Fasch. Juxtaposing them shows how well they stand up to Bach’s concertos. Telemann’s Concerto in E minor for violin and flute (52:e) and one for Violin in C (52:C2) are also excellent pieces. Unlike Bach, Telemann indulges in the contemporary “sentimental style”, palpable in the quick changes of rhythm and unison writing in the orchestra. Kaspar Förster’s Concerto in G minor is more boisterous, and Graun’s Violin and Recorder Concerto in C is more simplistic. Long Vivaldian sequences dominate his fast movements. | |
