W. Moore OK. The word is viola da gamba but here they are played on a Stradivarius viola (not gamba!). This has been done many times before and does not do much damage to these three concise and enjoyable sonatas. They are joined here by a transcription of an aria from Bach’s Cantata 5, Wo Soll ich Fliehen Hin, a lovely song without words as played here. Tamestit has been a stealer of music for other instruments for many years. In his first appearance with ARG his Hanssler recording of Bach’s Partita 2 for violin with Gyorgy Ligeti’s demanding solo viola sonata was enjoyed by Joseph Magil (July/Aug 2007). He took over Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata and arranged several of his songs on a Na‹ve CD (July/Aug 2010). He played Bach cello suites 1, 3, and 5 on another Na‹ve disc (Sept/Oct 2013). He tackled some actual viola music and more by Hindemith, reviewed with enthusiasm but with reservations by Gil French (Jan/Feb 2015). So here he is, back to Bach, played with warmth and musical subtlety. He is joined by Suzuki, known to us as a conductor as well as a harpsichordist (also a composer and arranger). The sound is fine. | |
