Brewer This new release continues the series of recordings based on the biennial productions of the Boston Early Music Festival. These two short entertainments are not dramatically complex but are filled with the grace and inventiveness associated with the music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The scale of the Boston production of Les Arts Florissants is much less lavish than the 2018 recording by the Ensemble Marguerite Louise (Chateau de Versailles 1). Rather, it reflects a chamber style that is perhaps more appropriate for these shorter dramatic works—very similar to William Christie’s earlier recordings of these pieces (Plaisirs de Versailles, May/June 1997, and Les Arts Florissants, Harmonia Mundi 8901083, 2016). All performers (vocal and instrumental) are excellent, and the booklet includes full librettos and translations.
