This is the seventh release in
the Orlando Consort’s complete Guillaume de Machaut. As in the previous six
recordings …these are vocal only performances: the accompanying parts in the
polyphonic songs are vocalized while one voice sings the words. In the more
complex works it is still difficult to discern the original text in a number
of passages because of the vocal haze around it. What is most significant about this new release is that alongside some “old standards”, such as the ballade ‘De toutes flours’, it contains first recordings for the virelai ‘Se d’amer me repentoie’ and rondeau ‘Merci vous pri’ and the first complete recordings for the virelai ‘Loyaute vueil tous jours’ and ballade ‘Je sui aussi’. I also note a clearer declamation of the text by countertenor Matthew Venner than on the earlier recordings in this series. Each of the four members sings one of Machaut’s mono-phonic virelais, but I wonder why some of the refrains could not have been sung in chorus by all to create more variety in texture and timbre. I also wonder when the other 11 lais will be recorded. Still, this is an important release that is finally giving a coherent overview of Machaut’s music and continues to illustrate his significance to the early history of French song. | |
