Loewen Vol. 20 of the Complete Schütz recordings includes a large variety of sacred concertos and songs. Schütz wrote some of them on commission for important historical events. For example ‘Da Pacem, Domine’ was composed for the electoral assembly held in Mühlhausen from 18 October to 12 November 1627. Others are of a more personal nature, often funerary. Schütz composed the solo song ‘Mit dem Amphion Zwar’ on the death of his wife Anna Magdalena Wildeck. The program also exploits extremes. ‘Herr, der du Bist Vormals Gnädig Gewest’ is a concerto of staggering proportions for soloists, choir, and two choirs of instruments consisting of strings, cornetts, trombones, and continuo. ‘Mit dem Amphion Zwar’ is a solo song with continuo. ‘Vater Abraham, Erbarme Dich Mein’ comes across like a German oratorio, for soloists and orchestra.
The one element that unites the program is the expressive word painting. It is perhaps for this reason Oliver Geisler notes the correlation between the works on this program and the Italian Madrigals on Volume 2 of the series (Carus 83.237). The most exciting examples occur in ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’ and the Easter dialog ‘Weib, Was Weinest Du’”. In both, Schütz employs extraordinary harmonic progressions—chromatic and by thirds— which evoke the stile moderno of his teacher Giovanni Gabrieli and his pioneering contemporaries. It is a wonderful program.
