Masaaki Suzuki, founder of the Bach Collegium Japan, has had a notable career as a conductor, organist, and harpsichordist. This is Volume 3 in his series of Bach organ works.

This is big, bold, robust, middle-of-the-road Bach playing, neither preciously historical nor overtly romantic. He plays on a superb 1714 3-manual, 44-stop Silbermann organ in Freiberg Cathedral. It combines the French style of voicing for the reed stops with the characteristic German style of powerful foundation stops. I found this satisfying in every way. He is not afraid to use the full resources of this marvelous instrument to infuse his performances with power, color, passion, and imagination. Of interest is his use of the C-major variant of S 566, rather than the E-major original. There are several suggestions as to why Bach transposed it: was it to make it easier to play?; to avoid D-sharp and/or notes higher than C1 in the pedal?; or to have the two variants available for different purposes and/or instruments?

 

I haven’t enjoyed a recording of Bach organ pieces as much as this one in a long time and look forward to hearing more in this series. The recorded sound is excellent, and the booklet has intelligent and informative notes on the music, with photos and specification. Well worth adding to your Bach organ music library.
