Theorbo Pieces Jonas Nordberg BIS 2417—70 minutes
Girolamo Kapsberger (or Kapsperger, c1580-1651) was a German lutenist and composer who worked for the papal court in Rome. His publications were from 1604 to 1640. ... I don’t know about anyone producing a complete recording of Kapsberger’s music yet. I have noticed only three duplicated pieces (Canarios, Toccata 2, Galliard 8) that Jacobs and Nordberg both play. Their instruments are tuned at different pitches—Nordberg’s is a little higher. Nordberg plays many of the same pieces recorded by Paul O’Dette (1990, easy to get in any of its reissues). Jacobs includes hardly any pieces I have heard before.
Nordberg’s performance sounds like inspired spontaneous invention, where Jacobs sounds perfectly prepared and reproduced. If I had to keep only one of these discs, it would be Nordberg’s because of its weight and range, but Jacobs is also terrific. Both of these players have instruments with mellower and darker tone than Paul O’Dette (J/A 2008), Stefano Maiorana (M/A 2017), Yavor Genov (J/A 2013), and Hopkinson Smith (M/A 1997 & J/F 2003). Smith used a conventional lute, not a theorbo or chitarrone with extended bass strings. | |
