This program arranges the
polyphonic songs of Josquin des Prez for one voice with lute. The first
track is not a song, but the “little” Ave Maria. One title attributed here
to Josquin is Quant de vous seul, a work by Ockeghem not usually disputed
(this was not one of the five songs cited as questionable attributions in
the complete secular songs recorded by the Medieval Ensemble of London).
Mille regretz, widely recorded under his name, is here “attributed” to him.
It is followed by Narváez’s arrangement titled La Canción del Emperador (it
was Charles V’s favorite). Fortuna desperata is credited properly to either
Busnois or Josquin. En l’ombre d’ung buissonet gives credit jointly to Hans
Gerle. There is also a ricercar by Marco Dell’Aquila and six improvised lute
praeambula. La bernardina and Ile fantazies de Joskin are also played on the
lute.
The notes tell nothing about
the music, simply discussing how a polyphonic song can be arranged for one
voice with a lute covering the other voices. This is another way of hearing
a group of songs that are almost all very well represented on disc (only one
or two are less familiar). Romain Bockler, a new name as a soloist here who
has sung with several familiar early music ensembles, has a pleasant voice
and winning interpretations. Bor Zuljan and his relatives (along with
Bockler’s relatives) seem to be the force behind the project, and this is
their first recording as an ensemble. They found a little church in the
south of France that provided the right venue for the music. If you already
know these songs as they are usually rendered, you should enjoy this
different approach, so nicely accomplished.
