Brewer Dulces Exuviae consists only of baritone Romain Bockler and Bor Zuljan, lute; and this release contains arrangements of Josquin’s vocal works for voice and lute and his instrumental ensemble compositions for lute solo. Aside from the motet, ‘Ave Maria’, and the Italian frottola, ‘In te, Domine, speravi’, the remaining vocal works are all French chansons, among which are ‘Mille Regretz’ and Josquin’s lament for Ockeghem, ‘Nymphes des Bois’. This type of arrangement was common in the renaissance, and the booklet quotes Baldassare Castiglione, who wrote that “It seems to be that he who sings well makes beautiful music...but it is far more beautiful to be able to sing on the lute.”
Bockler offers a model of beautiful singing and adds tasteful ornamenta-tions in the style found in contemporary vocal treatises. He is ably supported by Zuljan, who has created arrangements of Josquin’s polyphony that sound idiomatic on the lute. There have been earlier similar recordings, such as Carlos Mena’s adaptation of Victoria motets (S/O 2004) and the recent collection by Armoni Concertada (J/A 2019: 193), but this new release sets a much higher standard.
The booklet is informative about the making of these arrangements and includes complete texts and translations. | |
