    These are ensemble concertos,
with no violin soloist. Disc 4 is licensed from Tactus (July/Aug 2016). The
rest of the set is newly recorded by Brilliant.
We get 40 concertos and 11
sinfonias. This is most of Vivaldi’s catalog numbers between R 110 and 168.
On each disc the concertos are grouped by ascending key sequences, so there
is a satisfying variety. The ensemble has two violins per part, one viola,
one cello, one violone (bass), and harpsichord. They use gut strings,
Baroque bows, and minimal vibrato. The musicians are all Italian, and no
director is credited. The self-congratulatory liner notes about the ensemble say this Vivaldi set “has met with huge acclaim among audiences and reviewers”. I take that to mean that many people enjoy this. It is enjoyable. The group’s interpretation is straightforward, and the music is clever and pleasant. The effects come naturally from the compositions without over-empha-sis. Other string ensembles have recorded some of these concertos. I have heard some of Simon Standage’s renditions from a generation ago, where he had more players and delivered a smoother interpretation. This new set is easily recommendable. | |
