... for something truly exceptional in the period instrument field I would recommend La Venexiana’s superbly performed three-disc collection of Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale, music which post-dated the more familiar Vespro della Beata Vergine by some 30 years. These recordings were made live in Cuenca (Iglesia de San Miguel), Spain, in March 2005 and promote the most gorgeous blend of sonorities, highlights among which are the Dixit Dominus primo from Vespro di San Giuseppe (disc 2 track 4) and, from the Missa solemnis (disc 3), the Offertorium (track 8) and the closing ‘Pianto della Madonna’.
