Brewer Aside from the Orlando Consort’s earlier Machaut recording on DG Archiv (May/June 1999), this is their fifth release on Hyperion in conjunction with the new edition of Machaut’s works (Jan/Feb 2014, May/June 2015, Nov/Dec 2016, Sept/Oct 2017). Slowly the gaps in Guillaume de Machaut’s discography are being filled in, though most of the selections here have been previously recorded. This release is an excellent anthology of the formes fixes: it contains 5 virelais, 4 ballades, 2 rondeaux, and 3 motets (3, 12, and 20). As noted by Tamsyn Hahony-Steel in the notes, the lyrics deal with the relational aspects of Fortune and Love.
The performance style remains predominantly the English a cappella style, with only one voice singing and the other voices vocalizing on a neutral vowel. In a few works words are added to the accompanying voices and this greatly helps the clarity of the texts. In both of the two monophonic virelais sung by countertenor, Matthew Venner, and in the polyphonic settings where he is the sole voice singing the text, the diction of the words is not as distinct as when any of the other singers sing alone or are the leading voice.
The booklet notes are
informative about the poetry of Machaut, but do not supply much detail about
the rich and varied musical textures of these works. As in the earlier
releases, the lyrics are complete and accompanied by R Barton Palmer’s
idiomatic English translations. I was disappointed that there was no lai
included on this release, but I hope that will be soon rectified as the
Machaut edition continues its publication both in print and in these
recordings. My suggestion would be to allow other performers (perhaps with a
few instrumentalists) to participate in this project to supply other sonic
realizations of this inventive and entrancing music. | |
