I long ago lost track of how many recordings have been devoted to arias from Handel’s operas (sometimes also from oratorios). Such programs are certainly excellent vehicles for the recent crops of Baroque vocal specialists, especially countertenors. (This) release … is a fine example of that sub-type.

Fagioli has selected 11 arias (two with recitatives) from nine Italian operas: Rinaldo, Il Pastor Fido, Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Rodelinda, Partenope, Ariodante, and Imeneo. At least four of the selections are quite familiar to Handelians by now, but the uniting factor of all is the meaning that Fagioli finds in them. He insists that these draw from him highly personal reactions, whether the arias be slow and thoughtful music or brash and excited. And he proves his point by making each item a telling vignette of character or situation. ‘Ombra mai fu’ is exaggerated sentimentality against the same character’s exaggerated rage. Caesar’s ‘Se in forito’ is a bewitching nature picture. ‘Scherza, infida’ is a study in brokenhearted anguish. The ending of ‘Dove sei’ is extraordinarily moving. Fagioli is adept at embellishments, contributing some really interesting cadential elaborations. He is given vigorous and appropriate support by Valova’s 16 instrumentalists.

Vivid sound. Good notes and full texts with translations. In all, this release is among the top specimens of its type.
