New vocal group record Gesualdo’s sixth book…
La Compagnia del Madrigale is a new ensemble initiated by Rossana Bertini
(soprano), Giuseppe Maletto (tenor) and Daniele Carnovich (bass), all
leading alumni of La Venexiana and Concerto Italiano who have collaborated
in one way or another for over 20 years. Accordingly, the singers possess
honed skills of listening and responding to each other in order to create
exquisite chiaroscuro to convey bittersweet pathos. Their recording of
Gesualdo’s Madrigali libro sesto (pubd 1611) is a masterclass in
quicksilver dynamic shading, meticulous cadential shaping, crystal-clear
poetic declamation and flawlessly judged harmonic shifts in extraordinary
five-voice pieces such as ‘Io parto, e non più dissi’ and ‘Moro, lasso, al
mio duolo’ (Stravinsky called the Sixth Book ‘23 canapés of caviar’).
